Should the Democrats take back the House of Representatives on November 7, Nancy Pelosi is set to become Speaker of the House - a job usually described as being two heartbeats away from the presidency.

The 66-year-old Democrat, from the Bay area of San Francisco - a bastion of liberalism - would become the first Democrat to hold the job in 12 years and the first woman ever to do so.
